Unbelievably well-lit large format landscape images. Fantastic locations, impossible lighting. The juxtaposition of polished, controlled, synthetic lighting and rough and natural landscapes creates a strong conceptual tension.

The images from this project were created by use of Kodak Aerochrome film; an infra-red film designed to show vegetation as bright pink, making camouflaged buildings stand out for use in surveillance, or for vegetation surveys and so on.
The project Infra is about the ongoing conflict in the Congo. I am unsure how relevant pink coloration is amongst death and war; a moral juxtaposition of 'happy pink' and unhappy Congo. Whether you are comfortable or not with the photographers choices in representation, the images certainly make for striking and beautiful aesthetic pieces. The juxtaposition of a war amongst this is certainly provocative, but war is a part of life, so why not be creative when representing it, as with all other subject matter to which this is deemed acceptable.

Almost nothing; insignificant details from everyday life that we all know the sight of. But these slightly banal images make us look, and contemplate the things around us. The images are almost from a child's viewpoint, seeing things as new and trying to understand. When presented with these images; we begin to look closer into these everyday 'boring' scenes and try to find meaning. We may not find meaning or learn anything, but the very act of asking 'what does this mean' makes us re-think our surroundings, placing the viewer somewhere very familiar but alien all of a sudden.

A story of man's taming of the natural landscape, and a study into the regimented, rigid nature of holiday resorts. Represented through images of Gran Canaria at night, bathed in harsh artificial light that shines brighter than day. The images are so bright, vivid and in such neural colour that it could be daylight in these scenes, but the light comes from below subjects. All that remains of the natural world is small insignificant plant life trapped in the spaces we allow it to occupy. The landscape has truly been turned on its head, manipulated beyond recognition.
Gefeller is a detached observer; precise and formal, viewing the world through fresh eyes but without much derivative from the reality present at time of capture. This apparently unbiased 'truth' makes the surreal nature of images all the more potent, therein lies the power of his work: confusion within absolute clarity.
